Attacking players will attempt to contact a target set up on the other side of the net.. The attacker will attempt to contact a target on the opposite side of the net with the ball.. Volleyball is a popular sport played by males and females of all ages and abilities. There is little league volleyball, club/competitive volleyball, high school volleyball, college volleyball, and sand volleyball. The basic skills in volleyball center around serving, blocking, passing, setting, hitting, blocking and digging. Volleyball players are skilled in all of these areas, but most of them excel in one specific skill. Players of all levels are constantly looking for ways to improve their skills and take their game to the next level. Having a successful volleyball training advantage is vital in staying with and excelling past the competition.

Setting, hitting, spiking, serving, passing, and blocking are difficult skills to master.. When a volleyball player is at practice or advancing their skill set on their own time, they are able to put on the resistance bands just above the knees to practice the skills that will be performed in a volleyball game.. We will discuss in further detail below how utilizing the Myosource Kinetic Bands will positively impact a volleyball players hitting, passing and blocking skills.. Volleyball hitters who can jump higher while maintaining body control will be able to hit the ball to a selected spot, making it difficult for the opponent to return.. The hitter can then focus on the timing of the set and be in position for a powerful and successful hit.. A volleyball hitter must remember that the volleyball needs to stay in front of the hitting shoulder.. If the volleyball is set into a position that is too far in front of the hitter, they will most likely not be able to hit the ball with power but will have to tip the volleyball over the net.. No matter which way a volleyball player passes the ball, the passer must maintain a balanced athletic position that allows for multi-directional movement.. In order to develop a great forearm pass it is important for a volleyball passer to get their body lined up behind the ball in order to make contact with it at their mid section.. Forearm passing utilizes legs, hips, and shoulders explosive strength to pass the volleyball to the setter.. If the volleyball is over waist high then the forearm pass is hard to execute.

Hitting in volleyball is the act of offensively attacking the ball to make it difficult or impossible for your opponent to play the ball.. The setter sets the player who passed them the ball.. Hitting from a hitter’s box allows a player to focus on the positioning and mechanics of a strong attack without controlling the variables of jumping, tracking the ball and timing.. Since every hitter is hitting line, the defenders have a decent chance to dig and keep the ball in play.. On the opposing side, you’ll need a middle back passer, a setter, and a left-side hitter, and a right-side hitter.. The setter chooses which hitter to set and the setter attacks the ball.. The hitters are lined up outside or right side in an even number (your middle hitters should be blocking on the defense for this drill).. The hitter strikes the ball and then has to run to the back corner of the opposite side of the court than they are on, then back to their position for another hit.. Variation – it would be fine to give middle hitters a chance to hit and run another cycle of this game with middle forming one line and using 2 of your outside hitters to block.. The setter sets the ball outside, in a typical outside hitting zone.. The “Hitting From The Box” drill listed above is an ideal one-person drill, but often you won’t have a net or a hitting box when you are trying to improve on your own, so here are some other drills to help.. A 3-grade pass in volleyball is the best possible pass, it’s a pass that allows your setter to choose any of the 3 hitters to set.

The setter position is the most complex role on a volleyball team.

Encourage the setter to continue to use good footwork (left/right/square) to be square under the ball.. Players will set the ball in this order: player two to player three; player three to player one; player one to player four; player four to player two.. Once player four sets to player two, the cycle starts anew: player two to player three; player three to player one; player one to player four; player four to player two and repeat.. The player in that position will overhead pass a ball to the third player and follow the ball to the position she or he just passed to.. The player in the third position will overhead pass a ball to the “top point” position, which is now the person that was in line behind the original passer.

Seven-time NCAA Division One champion coach Penn State's Russ Rose does a version of this drill in his practices.. Teach your volleyball team these 3 hitting techniques to improve your attack effectiveness! This is a great drill for beginners because it teaches them that they have options when they attack the ball, and high school teams start to hit openings on your opponent's side with increased accuracy!

Defense should be yelling “tip” just before every attack to make sure everyone is ready for the tip.. After a few minutes switch front row and back row for defense so everyone gets a chance to practice both tipping and defending against tips.. If they have enough control, players can try to tool their hit off the block (when you hit into the block on purpose but the ball goes out, giving you the point), hit sharp line or cross-court, or even try to swing through the block if your blockers are late.. Switch front row back row if you have enough players or need to, or change individual players to get everybody warmed up.. After a team has three “little points” they earn a “big point” and you switch up front row and back row, or move players around.. Attack : Uses your approach footwork (3-Step Approach: Left, Right-Left for a right-handed player, and 4-Step Approach: Right, Left, Right-Left also for a right-handed player) and attack armswing.. Players will then tuck their left elbow into their side to start their swing, make contact with the ball as if they were giving it a high-five, and then continue to follow through with their swinging arm for power.

Volleyball is a sport in which you are normally coached and trained as a team, but each player and each position can be very different…

You will often see someone who backpedals to the ball simply set straight up in the air because they can’t get the right push behind the ball.. Have a coach, parent or partner just toss you the weighted ball and set the ball just like you would a regular ball.. This ball is heavier and you’re not trying to injure or strain your hands (or take a ball to the face).. Can you set your outside hitter with this ball from your regular setting position?. You will often see setters jump as they set or even after they set.. Dumping the ball as a setter is when you contact the ball up above the net and you perform a hit instead of setting.. You will appear to be about to set, but then drop the hand closest to the net and use the hand furthest away to hit the ball over.. If your opponents don’t respect your jump set, you can simply dump the ball over the net with a surprise hit.. You are not winding up for a spike, you’re going to keep your hands in setter position, then at the last moment, drop your net-side hand (usually your right hand) and use your other hand to dump the ball over.. As with your typical dump, begin with your jump setting position, then wait for the ball to get right above your head, twist your right hand so that your palm is facing you (behind the ball’s trajectory), and dump the ball behind you.. This is most powerful when the ball is passed to you a little too close to the net and you’re contacting the ball above the net anyways.. When the ball is slapped, you flip your hands up, paying attention to the position, and simply catch the ball.. In each of these positions, the setter is being forced to control their upper body to adjust to the ball and get behind the ball while remaining seated.. They can choose to underhand set (which is using your platform pass to set), or they may perform a normal set, but then the attacker must not jump, they must attack from a standing position.

The best way to get good at a sport is to practice. However, when playing in a recreational sports league, you’re just showing up to…

Here are some ways that you can practice some of the basic skills of volleyball by yourself, and all you need is a volleyball, some space, and a wall.. The great thing about practicing volleyball by yourself is that you don’t have the distraction of other players, and you can really concentrate on the proper techniques for each of the volleyball skills.. Get to know the volleyball Many of the skills in volleyball centre around having good ball handling skills.. The bonus is that even by doing some warmup drills by yourself, you’ll start to get a better feel of playing with the volleyball and improving those ball handling skills.. Starting with the ball in both hands over your head, bounce the ball onto the floor about halfway between you and the wall, so that it bounces off the wall back to you.. Volley against the wall Volleying against the wall feels a bit more natural than volleying just to yourself, which really doesn’t happen much in a game.. Take a second step with your right leg, and start to swing your arms forward (swinging your arms forward gives you added momentum as you jump).. Make sure you also bring your hitting arm (in this example, your right arm) backwards like an arrow in a bow, ready to swing at the imaginary volleyball – and then actually swing at an imaginary volleyball!. Hit against the wall Even though the angle of when you’re hitting against the wall isn’t the same as a spike or a serve, again, it’s about how the ball feels against your hand when you’re hitting it.. Work on getting your arm back into hitting position after you finish your follow through, and keep your fingers wide so that you get good coverage on the volleyball when you contact it.. Take a few steps back, and instead of hitting the ball on the ground, hit it straight ahead on the wall.. Wall Pepper Once you feel comfortable with using the wall, you can start to combine some of the above drills, and even try to get in some solo peppering!. Start about 10 feet away from the wall, and serve the ball at the wall.. Now, instead of just catching the ball, volley it to yourself, then hit it back at the wall.

How to dive in volleyball: This post will give you an extensive guide and tutorial for how to dive in volleyball.. When to dive and when to roll; How to dive: Tutorial in 6 Steps (with video and photo); How to overcome the mental block; How to get comfortable diving; and How to practice diving by yourself: One simple drill.. Often called the swan dive, or sometimes the volleyball dolphin dive, this is a technique used in volleyball to keep the ball alive in difficult situations.. In this way, the volleyball dive can be thought of as a technique to control how you fall to the floor, while still playing the ball.. During the swan dive, your chest will take a large part of the load on your fall–as you move forward through the ball and slide across the floor, it’s your arms and chest that break the fall.. The Volleball Dive: When you are chasing a ball, running or stretching far out in front of you to play the ball.. The first step, I believe, is to practice the dive from as close to the floor as possible.. Most likely, you’ll be chasing down a ball, or you will take a few quick steps before completing the dive.. Mark your starting position; Make a superman move without the ball and stay on the floor; Have your partner stand in line with where you chest lands on the floor: that will be a good place for them to drop the ball in this first exercise.. Instead, focus on staying low to the floor wherever you are, and make a diving movement no matter what–even if the ball landed two seconds ago!. Have them toss the ball directly up, so that you can practice make a running dive without too much variation to start.. Focus on moving quickly to the ball; Stay low to the ground as you approach the ball; And feeling confident that you arms and chest will break your fall after you’ve played the ball.. In fact, breaking down the diving process into incremental steps like in the Tutorial above is about the best way to approach diving without fear.

In volleyball there are a few different options when it comes to what formations you can use to give yourself the tactical edge over the…

By using two setters in this formation and the main setter being the one in the back court, it can often be a great tactical advantage to swap the setter out and bring out a stronger front row player.. In the front row we actually have the opposite issue, the middle who we obviously want in the middle is at position 4 (top left) and the outside hitter who plays through position 4 is in the middle at position 3.. Briefly touching on them here the setter would now be at position 6 (Back middle), in this position they can’t cross to the left of the player at position 5 (Back left) which in this case would be the middle, they can’t cross to the right of the player at position 1 (back right) which would be the outside player, or in front of the player at position 3 (Front middle) which would be the right sided hitter.. As the ball is passed up after the serve the outside who stepped back to help pass will move forward, the middle and outside players who are back court will both step left into their base positions and the middle player front court will drift towards the centre of the court and get ready for the set.. This one is slightly more confusing as the player we pull back to pass in place of the setter is actually still the front court outside player who in this rotation would be at position 3 (front middle).. Once the serve has taken place and the ball is passed up the setter will run to position 2.5 ready to set, the outside who can back to assist with the pass will step forward to position 4 ready to hit and the middle player will drift towards the centre of the court, again ready to hit.. In the back row the outside player is already standing in their base position at position 6 whilst the back court middle must run across court to position 5 ready to cover a block.

Volleyball is a fast paced action packed game and generally if you leave an attacking player with an open net and no blocker is almost…

With this in mind it is important that our arms and hands are already up and ready.. Now what this means is when we are jumping and our hands and arms cross the top of the net we actually want to reach over the net to cut down the angle and time that the hitter has to attack the ball.. Blocking the Opposite/ Right side Hitter When it comes to blocking the opposite we have two things to consider, the first is how we block them when front court vs how we block them when they are hitting back court.. As mentioned above when I was going through the detailed blocking guide we want to ensure that we not only take the line angle away but if they do try and hit it we are turning the ball back into the centre of the court, so as the outside we want to push our left arm slightly further forward than our right arm to create that nice angle back in court.. A 10 hit is where the player spikes the ball from back court when they are playing position 1.
