How should your hands be in volleyball?

Right before contact, the hands should be shaped to the ball - like a basket. During the release, the thumbs should turn inwards to flick the ball forward. Keep the shape of the hands throughout the contact and follow through fully. With a backset, the hand position should stay the same.

Cobra : With the fingers extended straight and stiff, the ball is poked with the fingertips.

Can You Spike With A Closed Fist? You can spike with a closed fist, it is legal, but not recommended. When you hit with a closed fist, you don't have as much control over the ball. Can you punch serve in volleyball?

So, what is the hardest volleyball positions? The one you have to play. The two positions that I think are generally considered “by the experts” to be the “hardest” are libero and setter.

The strongest position is when your bottom hand palm is facing down, and your top hand palm is facing up. If you open up your hands they should both be parallel to the ground. As you make contact, your grip will naturally get tighter and your top hand thumb will not allow the bat to get knocked backwards.

Players with bigger hands have more hand to get on the ball which help control the ball. Although bigger hands allow you to grab more of the ball and set cleaner, when you do double contact with your fingers it's usually more obvious. Setters with smaller hands have more trouble setting the ball cleanly.

The optimal block is when you place two hands next to each other and turn them SLIGHTLY "around the ball". When you turn your hands "around the ball" it works better than just putting up "a straight and flat surface". (For example rightside blocker turns the right hand slightly "inside", towards center of the court.)

Volleyball is obviously a sport where height matters — taller players have a higher reach, can get above the net more easily and more quickly, and have more options for hitting.

Muscles used in Volleyball

A strong base, legs and hips, as well as explosive lower leg strength is needed to jump and move for the ball. Strong shoulders are needed for the various overhead shots. Good strength in the core muscles helps with balance and control.
