Start goal setting for your volleyball team today! Let me help you understand how to set personal goals in volleyball and how to set team goals, too! Great for the beginner volleyball coach and more experienced coaches looking for ways to get ahead this season!

And by assess resources, I mean to take an honest look at your team, and determine the best way to utilize your time to meet expectations.. Teams who can practice three times a week have an advantage over teams who practice once a week.. An example of the goals I like to use during the season relate to passing, serving and attacking percentages.. For my teams at the 14U level, I have found that my teams are most successful when we get 90% of our serves in, 85% of our attacks over the net, and 60% of the passes we make can be reached by the setter (my 90-85-60 rule).. By staying focused on our goals, I know when to switch things up to keep our team on track.. If a player's goal is to get 20 kills in a match, but the team's goal is to play more as a team, either one or both goals will likely not be achieved.. After the game, go to the goals as soon as possible and have your players evaluate themselves.. Have the girls ask themselves things like, "Did I swing even when I shouldn't have?". Having a goal set like, "jump higher," or "set better," is not going to do your girls any good.. Goals need to specify exactly how much higher they want to get, or where their sets need to be going.. Having goals gives your girls a purpose during practices and motivation during games.. They make them concentrate on the effort they're putting into everything and overall make your team better than they would be if they just went to practices and games with no purpose.. Do you set team goals and personal goals, or do you only focus on one?

In volleyball, having an end of the season vision is the center point for which all success and failure hinges.

Once this is established, athletes can use this to begin planning goals to achieve their vision, one step at a time.. Once these goals are reached, athletes can set more realistic goals to continue working towards.. Process Goals : Athletes should evaluate their current set of skills and understand the process for how to achieve their first realistic goal.. Furthermore, athletes need to understand where they are and what progress they need to make to achieve their goals.. Process goals: Once athletes have rated themselves and analyzed the different aspects of their game, they can pick skills to work on for the upcoming season.. Athletes should pick a specific goal for each area (physical, skill, mental) and each goal should be time bound, measurable, realistic, specific, and based off of an athlete’s current baseline.. Creating specific goals and understanding the smaller steps needed to reach those goals will help athletes determine a successful plan for the volleyball season.. Updating and monitoring goals keeps athletes focused on their progress, which drives motivation and confidence.. Focus - Increase my focus and attention to 85% for the entire duration of a work out, practice, or game.. For example, I lose focus when I’m winning or when my confidence is down.. This should drive my awareness and focus to limit mental distractions.

Set Your Volleyball Goals High And Don’t Stop Till You Get There. By:Jennifer McCallister     It’s pretty self explanatory.   This has to be my favorite quote, “Set Your Volleyball Goals High And Don’t Stop Till You Get There.”  It’s so true on many levels. Everytime I read it, I think of all the […]

This has to be my favorite quote, “Set Your Volleyball Goals High And Don’t Stop Till You Get There.” It’s so true on many levels.. It makes me think more in depth too, about team goals, what it takes to achieve different goals, support you have when you’re trying to reach your goal, etc.. It makes you want to set another goal and work after it, it changes your mindset about volleyball in terms of how much love you have for it, and it changes the way coaches see you as a player.. Be motivated everyday to achieve that goal you set for yourself.. It may takes days, weeks, or even months but the outcome will make it worth the wait.. Get 20 kills in one match Gaining a faster arm swing Improve vertical by 3 inches. Whether that be at home with volleyball training equipment or taking extra time after practice to work on different shots.. You spend a lot of time in the gym, so maybe taking that hard work home will also motivate you to keep striving toward your goal.. You set them up by having someone watch you do your approach at the wall, and wherever your hand reaches to while jumping, that’s where they put the tape.. My coach made us touch our piece of tape 10 times before we could move on to volleyball.. Not only 10 times but after those 10 times, we had to try and get five in a row and if we did we got to move our tape up half an inch.. Box jumps are another way to work on your vertical.

If you are in the running to be your volleyball team’s next captain, congratulations! It is a great privilege to lead a hardworking team to…

Excellent administration skills, Thorough knowledge of game rules and strategies, Respect of the other team members, Dedication to the team and the game, Ability to motivate and inspire team members even when the team fails.. What’s expected of a volleyball team captain may change from one team to the next.. Many players wrongly believe that the best player on the team should be the next team captain.. Choosing a team captain is about finding someone who can be a go-between for the players and the staff, ensure the team is practicing sufficiently, and keep everyone together as a close-knit team.. Probably one of the most important qualities of a volleyball team captain is respect from the other team members.. A team captain needs to show dedication to the team and the game.. A good team captain encourages a team to practice, practice, practice while instilling an attitude of “anything for the team”.. The captain is able to resolve issues within the team and keep the team thinking and working as a team, regardless of any hardships and differences of opinion that might arise.. A good team captain has a “take charge” approach when it comes to motivating and inspiring team members.. It is being able to keep a team going when the going gets tough that makes for an excellent volleyball team captain quality.

Some serving volleyball strategies for learning to serve under pressure.... Common volleyball strategies for passing include having players try and cradle the ball on their arms when they pass, thinking players can get better control of tough floaters the longer the ball stays on their arms.. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while—you do them right all the time.. link to What Is the 10-Foot Line in Volleyballlink to How to Pass a Volleyball Being able to pass a volleyball is one of the most important skills you will ever learn as a volleyball player.

The setter position is the most complex role on a volleyball team.

A player standing at each antenna to receive sets and return balls to the coach or player tossing the ball.. The person elected to toss the ball will toss the ball to the setter, who sets the ball to either antenna.. Call the Set – The person who is tossing the ball can call out which direction to set as the ball is in flight.. A ball is tossed to passive player standing alone, who sets it to the other passive player with the active player next to her or him.. The active player runs a figure eight through the players, stopping beside the opposite passive player and sets the ball to the passive player, who sets it back while the active player joins her or him after another figure eight.. The passive players repeat this process as the active player runs figure eights and sets every other ball to the opposite passive player.. Four players on the three-meter line standing equidistant from each other starting at one sideline and ending at the other (player one is on one sideline and player four is on the other, players two and three are the middle players).. Players will set the ball in this order: player two to player three; player three to player one; player one to player four; player four to player two.. Once player four sets to player two, the cycle starts anew: player two to player three; player three to player one; player one to player four; player four to player two and repeat.. Players should be focused on keeping control of the set and setting it along the three-meter line to their target; the sprints to the end line tend to encourage players to focus on just getting the ball up rather than executing controlled sets.. Players guide the ball counter clockwise around a triangular pattern with one person at the “point” bump passing while the other two players use an overhead set.. Four players – one at the top point of the triangle, one in line behind that player, and one player at each of the base points of the triangle (all players about 12 feet apart).. The player in that position will overhead pass a ball to the third player and follow the ball to the position she or he just passed to.

These articles were written and contributed by Scott Rosberg Individual Goals vs. Team Goals (Post 2 of 5) In the first post in the series, I talked about the importance of team members focusing on team over individual.  If you missed that post,  Click “Individual vs. Team,” so you can read that one first. Today I […]

Most teams, whether they be sports teams, work teams, fund-raising teams, or any other team, will talk about the goals of the team as they begin to embark upon the journey of their season.. The first question when thinking about the ideas of goals and goal-setting is, “Should team members develop individual goals or team goals?. At the same time, if we hear individual goals that run counter to the team goals (more on that later), we can also work to hold teammates accountable to not pursuing those individual goals over the team goals.. Depending upon how much time you took with the individual goals, you may need multiple days/meetings to do all of the individual and team goals.. Discuss how some of the individual goals fit within the framework of others’ individual goals and with the team goals.. Finally, discuss any individual goals that are detrimental to others’ individual goals or the team goals.. Once you have had a good discussion and you feel you are ready to move forward, take the entire list of team goals that you have created and as a group come up with a narrowed down list of 3-5 team goals for the entire team.. It will also be the list of goals that you will hold players and coaches accountable to when their own individual goals are getting in the way of them working toward the team goals.

Use the tip to score a point or sideout if you are an outside hitter who gets a set close to the net.. Be the last player to touch the ball in a joust.. When two players contact the ball at the same time over the net, the second one to touch the ball almost always wins.. Tip to the middle of the court instead of behind the block.. When you’ve been blocked a couple of times and you’re looking to change up your attack, especially in long rallies, remember that the middle of the court is almost always open especially when you feel you don’t have any hitting options.. The 6 -2 rotation or offense allows three hitters to hit when they're in the front row all the time.

Volleyball is a sport in which you are normally coached and trained as a team, but each player and each position can be very different…

Have a coach, parent or partner just toss you the weighted ball and set the ball just like you would a regular ball.. Can you set your outside hitter with this ball from your regular setting position?. Dumping the ball as a setter is when you contact the ball up above the net and you perform a hit instead of setting.. You are not winding up for a spike, you’re going to keep your hands in setter position, then at the last moment, drop your net-side hand (usually your right hand) and use your other hand to dump the ball over.. As with your typical dump, begin with your jump setting position, then wait for the ball to get right above your head, twist your right hand so that your palm is facing you (behind the ball’s trajectory), and dump the ball behind you.. They can choose to underhand set (which is using your platform pass to set), or they may perform a normal set, but then the attacker must not jump, they must attack from a standing position.

One area in which sport psychology can be helpful to both individuals and teams is assisting with the development of goals.

The following will describe how a sport psychologist may work with a team and. team members to create goals to enhance overall performance of the team.. The next step would be to meet with the team and get team support for the goal setting process by. discussing the benefits of goal setting.. These tenets involve setting specific measurable goals, setting challenging but realistic goals,. setting practice as well as competitive goals, making sure the goals are framed positively, setting. target dates to keep focused, recording goals and making a public commitment, and setting both. short-term and long-term goals.. Once the team members understand the concepts of goal setting, the psychologist can meet individually. with the athletes to develop personal goals.. With the individual athlete the psychologist can assist. with choosing one or two specific goals, setting target dates by using the stair-step method of. breaking the goal into smaller segments, developing the specific strategies of achieving the goals,. and developing rewards for achieving the goals.. In addition, both long-term goals and short-term goals are important because the. long-term goals provide direction whereas the short-term goals are most effective for change.. The psychologist can then meet with the entire team and the coach to develop specific team goals and. strategies in the same manner.
